With the arrival of spring, it brings with it a welcome change in weather and the perfect environment to begin ramping up your training. This time of year also brings with it a multitude of events to register for you to pad your event resume with.
It is not uncommon for an active individual to register for and participate in one event a weekend. This is certainly within the means of many people actively training depending on the duration or the type of event they are participating in. On that same note it is very easy to jump into, or renew, a training regime with gusto and disregard the sometimes subtle, and sometimes not so subtle messages that your body is sending you. Pain, aching joints, cramping muscles and fatigue are some of the signals that could indicate an impending injury. It is not at all uncommon to disregard these feelings. A helpful tip is to keep a training journal with you that you can use to document any pains or how your training sessions go in general. Use it after a bike ride or a run or swim and briefly summarize how you felt during your training and try and describe in as much detail any feelings you may have felt from your body. If you ever do have any injuries you can look back and see how you have been feeling through your training sessions and see if you may have overlooked some obvious signals your body may have been trying to convey. This journal will also come in handy if you ever need to see your sports doctor for an injury due to your training. It might be hard to remember if you had a pain in your left foot at mile 17 of a marathon, but if you are documenting the events leading up to it in your training log you should be able to describe it fairly accurately to your doctor.
Don’t forget to use ice after any intense training sessions and make sure you are drinking plenty of water to provide your muscles with adequate hydration to function optimally. Be safe out there and don’t forget to have fun!
