Did you know that one of the most commonly reported symptoms experienced by pregnant women is low back pain? As much as 3/4 ‘s of all pregnant women experience low back pain at one point or another during the course of their pregnancy. Another interesting fact is that of the women who do experience low back pain during their pregnancy, 72% of these women will also experience back labor during delivery. Back labor, according to the American Pregnancy Association, is normally experienced by 25% of all pregnancies and is defined as when a pregnant woman experiences most of her discomfort or pain in her lower back during labor. What this means is that if you have low back pain during your pregnancy you have a 3-fold chance of experiencing back labor during delivery. With such a high incidence of back pain in pregnant women it is only reported to the patients prenatal provider 32% of the time! With only 25% of providers referring these women on to receive care for their low back pain!
A recent study by the Iowa Orthopaedic Journal in 2008 shows that a correlation exists between low back pain in pregnant women and a weakness of the gluteus medius muscle group. This is the muscle that is just below your hand if you put your hand on your hip. The study showed that the increase in body weight paired with the onset of hormonal ligament relaxation and an altered way of walking caused pain in the low back as a result of a gluteus medius muscle weakness that referred pain into the low back. Participants in the study who had a suitably strong gluteus medius muscle based on a manual muscle test did not demonstrate low back pain. This is very interesting because it proves that exercise done during pregnancy can not only be beneficial to the mother to keep her fit and from gaining excess prenatal weight, but it can also help ward off low back pain too.
Pregnancy is a beautiful thing that should be enjoyed for the wonder of nature that it is and not something that should be tolerated with pain. If you are experiencing any muscle pain be sure and talk to your prenatal provider and ask them to refer you somewhere for treatment. It will make you a happier mom, make for a smoother delivery, and a smoother delivery means a happy baby!
